Travel and other things that Alan and Joyce do...

Aug 1 – Koblenz, Germany

(It might be a few days before we put up pictures from today. When I put together all the pictures that both of us took, we had more than 800 to sort through. I don’t think any of you want to go through that many.  Not sure I do either!)

Outline……

  • Leaving the Main River, entering the Rhine River
  • Cruising the middle Rhine and viewing castles, castles and more castles
  • Lorelei Rock – river’s narrowest deepest point
  • Dock in Braubach
  • Tour of Marksburg Castle
  • Travel from Marksburg Castle to join Magni in Koblenz
  • Enrichment lecture: Castles of the Rhine
  • Port talk
  • Dinner – Harry, Jana, Greg, mini soup
  • Up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (Festung Ehrenbretstein) by way of cable car
  • Confluence of Rhine and Moselle Rivers
  • Equestrian statue of Prince William I
  • City at night

Today, we cruise past hilltop castles along the Rhine; this stunning stretch of the river is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We pass the Lorelei Rock, which marks the river’s narrowest point; the rock is named after a legendary Rhine Maiden who lured sailors to their demise.

This afternoon, we’ll arrive in Koblenz and stop to visit Marksburg Castle, the only Rhine fortress never destroyed. Rejoin your ship in Koblenz and dine aboard.

Sonya:  Koblenz – As you only have a few hours here, I recommend sticking with the included tour to visit Marksburg Castle.
